During a traumatic time in my life as I was coping with the onset of an anxiety disorder. I had intrusive thoughts. I couldn't stop thinking things like I am a piece of shit, I am a monster, I am so stupid, etc. To counter these thoughts, I wrote poetry. Out of this came a writing experiment that focuses on the first person plural pronoun we, and us. I am stupid became WE are stupid, which was funny and meaningful: If humanity can't be reduced to stupid, then neither could I.
