From the earliest centuries of the Church, the five books of Moses have stood as the great threshold through which every Christian must pass in order to understand the drama of salvation. Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy form not only the narrative and theological foundation of Israel's identity but also the indispensable prelude to the Gospel itself. For the Catholic tradition, the Pentateuch is not merely a historical artifact or a literary collection from antiquity. It is the first movement in the symphony of divine revelation, the opening act of God's self-disclosure, and the indispensable key to understanding Christ, the Church, and the entire economy of salvation. Yet the modern world has not approached the Pentateuch with the same assumptions that guided the Fathers, the medieval doctors, or the magisterium. Over the last three centuries, a vast and complex body of scholarship has emerged, often shaped by philosophical currents that diverge sharply from the Catholic understanding of revelation. Rationalism, skepticism, and the rise of historical-critical methodologies have profoundly influenced the way contemporary commentators read the Pentateuch. Many modern commentaries, even those written by scholars of sincere faith, operate within frameworks that prioritize questions of authorship, redaction, and historical reconstruction over theological meaning. The result is a landscape in which the Catholic reader must navigate with both openness and discernment, appreciating genuine scholarly insights while remaining anchored in the Church's perennial teaching.
