Drawing on internal platform documents, regulatory filings, whistleblower testimony, and eleven years of experience inside the digital influence industry, Sergey Berezkin shows that the outrage ecosystem is not a side effect of the internet age. It is a business with identifiable operators, documented revenues of $150-200 billion annually, and costs - in mental health, institutional trust, and democratic function - distributed across the entire population that is its raw material.
The book traces the industry's roots from medieval rumor networks and the pamphlet wars of the Reformation through the yellow press, the demagogue's radio, and the cable news confrontation format - showing that every communications technology in history has been discovered, within a generation of its introduction, to have properties perfectly suited to the amplification of anger. The current version is simply the most technically sophisticated and the most precisely targeted.
The Outrage Broker also examines what the industry does to you: the neuroscience of why outrage is physiologically addictive, how the algorithm exploits the dopamine system to keep you scrolling, what chronic anger does to the brain's capacity for deliberative reasoning, and why the adolescent brain is the industry's most valuable and most damaged market.
