As Indian gunners and West African infantry advance through the Kaladan Valley, their survival becomes part of the same vast chain of human effort. Soldiers carry ammunition where vehicles cannot travel. Porters cross rivers beneath impossible loads. Medical teams fight disease as fiercely as the enemy. Gurkhas, Indians, Africans, Burmese and British troops endure a campaign overshadowed by the war in Europe.
At the centre of it stands Umrao Singh's extraordinary defence of his gun position-an act of courage that will earn him the Victoria Cross. Yet beyond the battlefield lies another struggle: returning home, rebuilding a life and asking whether the country they helped defend will honour its promises.
Based on real people, documented battles and surviving testimony, Our Blood, Their Victory is a historical novel about courage, colonial inequality and the soldiers Britain called its Forgotten Army.
The story does not claim that Singh and Aziz personally met. Instead, it explores something equally powerful: people do not need to know one another's names to depend upon each other, contribute to each other's survival or belong to the same victory.
