This book offers a collective ethnography of love, intimacy, and care beyond the couple in pre-pandemic urban Italy--exploring queer and straight families of friends, flatmates, lovers, ex-lovers, and others in non-normative relationships. Drawing on a radical queer materialist approach, Other Intimacies examines the relationship between productive and reproductive labour in contemporary capitalism, value extraction and the queer Italian theory of gender (as) work and gender strike. It also contributes to anthropological debates on emotions, representation, and embodiment. Grounded in long-term grassroots collective research within Italian queer movements--involving self-inquiry with about 100 people and in-depth interviews--the book was originally published in Italian in 2022 and has now been updated to reflect recent policy changes. It will appeal to scholars in Queer and Feminist Studies, Queer Materialism, Anthropology of the Body, Family Studies, neo-Marxist and post-work theories, as well as practitioners, activists and anyone striving to live beyond compulsory coupledom.
