The Orchard Pavilion is one of his novels and begins: It was the pavilion which had first attracted Roderick Armitage to the place; he had caught a sight of its slender stone chimney, with the queer pierced ornament at the top, above the flowering apple-trees. Roderick had a pleasant taste for the style and aspect of houses, and saw beauties of proportion and material where many people could see none.
