EUGENIE de Talcy, brought up amid the splendours of Versailles, is forced to flee revolutionary Paris for her life. Aged nineteen, she finds herself, orphaned and destitute, on England's shore, alone but for her faithful maid Marie. It is almost the last straw when, on the long walk to London, an arrogant gentleman in a sporting-carriage heartlessly splashes the weary women as he passes. In London her fortunes improve when an old family friend, Lady Mary Berrington, takes her in. But she is shocked to discover that Lady Mary's adored nephew, the Earl of St Osyth, is none other than the heartless driver she has vowed never to forgive. And her new life is disrupted when an agent of Robespierre spots her, and a plot is hatched to kidnap her and take her back to Paris and the guillotine. Only St Osyth can save her ─ but will he?
