Unlock the boundaries of musical freedom and structure with a definitive guide to open form.
In Open Form in Music: From Contemporary to Jazz, guitarist, composer, and musicologist Dr. Hakan Kamalı delivers a comprehensive, rigorous exploration of one of the most revolutionary concepts in modern music history. Transitioning from the avant-garde concert halls of the mid-20th century to the boundary-pushing realms of modern jazz, this book maps the evolution of musical works that refuse to stay fixed.
Divided into two expansive sections, the book bridging the gap between rigorous contemporary classical theory and the radical liberation of jazz improvisation:
Part I: Open Form in Music dives deep into the poetics and mechanics of the open form. It demystifies complex concepts such as aleatoric music, mobile forms, indeterminacy, and the operations of chance. Dr. Kamalı masterfully analyzes how the traditional score transformed through graphic notation, textual notation, and modern generative music models, reshaping the relationship between composer, performer, and listener.
Part II: Open Form in Jazz tracks how these avant-garde philosophies manifested in the ultimate arena of musical freedom. From the birthplace of Free Jazz and the philosophy of free improvisation, the book examines the monumental frameworks that redefined the genre. Readers will explore the groundbreaking structural and cultural contributions of:
AACM & The Art Ensemble of Chicago (Improvisation as Action)
Sun Ra and his Arkestra (Ritualistic Improvisation)
Ornette Coleman (Harmolodics)
Cecil Taylor (Unit Structures)
Anthony Braxton (Tri-Axium Theory)
John Zorn (Game Pieces)
Butch Morris (Conduction)
Why This Book is Essential: Whether you are a musicologist tracking the intersections of contemporary composition, a jazz musician seeking new conceptual tools for improvisation, or an avid listener wanting to understand the genius behind avant-garde masters, this book provides the theoretical clarity and historical context you need.
Open Form in Music: From Contemporary to Jazz is not just an academic survey-it is an intellectual roadmap to understanding how indeterminacy, structure, and absolute freedom coexist to shape the past, present, and future of musical expression.
