What powers were the witches believed to wield, and how were they thought to work their harm? A searching account of curse and charm, the Devil's Mark, and the black books of forbidden lore.

Drawn from Montague Summers' The History of Witchcraft and Demonology (1926), this study examines the reputed practice of witchcraft: the working of malefice, the pact and its bodily seal, the familiar, and the grimoire or book of spells. Augustus Montague Summers (1880 - 1948) was an English author and clergyman celebrated for his earnest studies of witches, werewolves, and vampires, all of which he held to be quite real; in 1928 he produced the first English translation of the notorious witch-hunters' manual, the Malleus Maleficarum.
