This is a reproduction of Archdeacon Robert Thorp's sermon, On Establishments In Religion, And Religious Liberty, delivered before the University of Cambridge on July 1, 1792. A significant historical document, the sermon explores the complex relationship between religious institutions and individual freedom within the context of late 18th-century England.
Thorp, serving as Archdeacon of Northumberland, presents a nuanced argument concerning the role of established religion and the importance of religious liberty. This sermon offers valuable insights into the theological and political debates of the era, providing a window into the intellectual climate of Cambridge University and the broader social concerns regarding religious tolerance and the powers of the state. It remains relevant for those studying religious history, political thought, and the history of Christianity.
