Oliver and the Mean Words
Oliver loves listening to the world around him.
Every morning, he sits outside his little cottage at the edge of the woods and listens to the forest wake up. He hears robins singing in the trees, squirrels chattering in the branches, and the whisper of the wind dancing through the leaves. Oliver notices sounds that others often miss, and he treasures every one of them.
But Oliver has something that makes him different.
His ears are larger than the ears of the other young foxes.
At first, Oliver doesn't think much about it. He spends his days exploring woodland trails, running through meadows, and enjoying the beauty of the forest. Then one day, everything changes. A few foxes at Woodland School begin teasing him. What starts as a few unkind words soon grows into something that follows Oliver wherever he goes.
The teasing hurts.
Oliver begins to doubt himself. He stops joining games. He sits alone at lunch. He starts to wonder if being different is something he should hide.
Then one afternoon, beneath the branches of a great old oak tree, Oliver meets a wise rabbit who helps him see things in a new way. Through kindness, patience, and understanding, Oliver begins to discover that the things that make us different are often the things that make us special.
Soon after, Oliver notices another young fox named Finn standing alone while others laugh at him. Remembering his own hurt, Oliver faces a difficult choice. Will he stay silent, or will he find the courage to be the friend Finn needs?
With one simple act of kindness, Oliver learns that friendship can change a life.
Filled with heartwarming woodland illustrations and timeless lessons about empathy, courage, and belonging, Oliver and the Mean Words helps children understand the impact words can have on others while encouraging them to celebrate what makes them unique.
Perfect for children ages 4-9, parents, grandparents, teachers, counselors, and classrooms, this gentle story opens important conversations about bullying, self-confidence, friendship, inclusion, and emotional resilience.
Young readers will discover that kindness is stronger than cruelty, courage often begins with a single small step, and nobody should ever have to sit alone.
Part of the beloved Woodland Lessons Series, Oliver and the Mean Words is a touching story that reminds children that their worth is never determined by the opinions of others and that even the smallest act of kindness can make a big difference.
Because kind words matter.
Because friendship matters.
And because every child deserves to know they belong.
