An Old Hebrew Text of St. Matthew's Gospel provides a fascinating exploration into the linguistic and theological origins of one of the most significant books of the New Testament. In this scholarly work, Hugh J. Schonfield presents an in-depth analysis of a Hebrew version of Matthew's Gospel, examining its potential relationship to the original source texts of the Synoptic tradition. Schonfield meticulously compares the Hebrew phrasing with traditional Greek and Syriac versions, offering insights into how the Jewish context of the early Church influenced the recording of the life and teachings of Jesus.
This volume is essential for students of biblical textual criticism, Jewish-Christian studies, and the history of the New Testament. It addresses the provocative question of whether Matthew was originally composed in Hebrew or Aramaic, providing readers with a detailed examination of the text along with critical commentary. By focusing on the nuances of the Hebrew language, An Old Hebrew Text of St. Matthew's Gospel sheds light on the cultural and linguistic bridge between the Hebrew Bible and the New Testament, making it a valuable resource for anyone interested in the foundational documents of the Christian faith.
