The Old Bachelor is a play written by William Congreve, first performed in 1693. The play is a comedy of manners, which satirizes the fashionable society of the time. The story revolves around the character of Heartwell, an old bachelor who is content with his single life, but is constantly pressured by his friends to marry. Heartwell is initially resistant to the idea of marriage, but eventually falls in love with a young woman named Silvia. However, Silvia's father, Sir Simon, disapproves of Heartwell and tries to force her to marry someone else. The play is filled with witty dialogue, mistaken identities, and romantic entanglements. It also explores themes such as love, marriage, and the role of women in society. The Old Bachelor is considered to be one of Congreve's most successful plays, and is still performed and studied today.SIR JO. Um--Ay, this, this is the very damned place; the inhuman cannibals, the bloody-minded villains, would have butchered me last night. No doubt they would have flayed me alive, have sold my skin, and devoured, etc. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
