Olalla is a gothic horror novella written by Robert Louis Stevenson. The story is set in the mountains of Spain and follows the narrator, a wounded soldier, who is taken in by a family living in a decaying mansion. The family is headed by Dona Olalla, a beautiful and mysterious woman who seems to be haunted by a dark past. As the soldier recovers, he becomes increasingly drawn to Olalla, but also becomes aware of the family's disturbing secrets. The novella explores themes of madness, family secrets, and the destructive power of desire. With its eerie atmosphere and vivid descriptions, Olalla is a haunting and suspenseful tale that will leave readers on the edge of their seats.But the intelligence (that more precious heirloom) was degenerate; the treasure of ancestral memory ran low; and it had required the potent, plebeian crossing of a muleteer or mountain contrabandista to raise, what approached hebetude in the mother, into the active oddity of the son.
