The Odes of Pindar are a classic example of Ancient Greek poetry, showcasing the complex style and towering abilities of the poet, and the nature of the society in which he lived.
Pindar was among the first poets to reflect deeply upon the meanings and structure of the verse form. Living in a time of war and upheaval in Greek society, just as its classical era was beginning, he was part of a literary vanguard which contributed to the country's flourishing culture. A recurring theme in his poems is a pondering of the fragility and changeable aspects of human life - yet Pindar also had immense faith in the Gods, and marveled at what his fellow man could accomplish thanks to grace and favor from the heavens. The verses of Pindar are complex in structure; the Archaic genres of his time were characterized by an unusual formation of lyrics. For this reason his poetry is considered less accessible than that of other writers of Greek antiquity. Yet this edition is accompanied by a scholarly introduction by the translator Richmond Lattimore, which delves into some of the themes and methods employed by Pindar in his compositions.
