In The Octopus: A Story of California, Norris turns to the vast wheat fields of California's San Joaquin Valley, where independent farmers struggle against the growing power of the railroad monopoly that controls transportation and pricing. Through a broad cast of characters-ranchers, laborers, speculators, and railroad agents-Norris depicts the mounting conflict between ordinary citizens and the impersonal forces of corporate power. The railroad, vast and relentless, becomes the octopus, a symbol of the economic systems tightening their grip on the American West.
The Pit: A Story of Chicago shifts the setting to the Chicago Board of Trade, where fortunes are made and lost in the volatile world of wheat speculation. At the center of the story is Curtis Jadwin, a powerful grain trader whose ambition drives him to attempt to corner the wheat market itself. As speculation escalates and prices spiral, Norris explores the psychological and social consequences of unchecked financial power.
Together these two novels form the first parts of Norris's ambitious but unfinished Epic of the Wheat, a literary project intended to examine the global movement of grain from American fields to international markets. Blending vivid realism with sweeping social observation, Norris created some of the most influential works of American naturalist fiction.
