For nearly a century, René Le Forestier's Occultisme et Franc-Maçonnerie au XVIIIe siècle has stood as the single most thorough and meticulously documented study of Martinès de Pasqually and the Order of Élus Coëns - the theurgical fraternity from which Louis-Claude de Saint-Martin's own teaching, and much of the later Martinist tradition, ultimately descends. Until now, that scholarship has remained locked away from the English-speaking world, accessible only to those with reading French or with access to a high-grade initiator willing to transmit its contents by word of mouth. This first complete English edition finally opens Le Forestier's research to Anglophone initiates, students, and scholars of Martinism, esoteric Freemasonry, and the Western Mysteries.
Organized in three books, the work first reconstructs the doctrine of the Réintégration - Pasqually's esoteric cosmology and anthropology, his typological and arithmosophic reading of Scripture, and the structure of the Order's Operations, Invocations, and Tracings, including reconstituted schemas of the primitive Table of the World. It then traces the doctrine's sources in Jewish esotericism, Kabbalah, Gnosticism, and the wider occultist and Masonic currents of the 18th century. Finally, it recounts the Order's organization and history in full: its Masonic degrees from the Class of the Porch through the high Coën grades, its rivalries with the Grand Lodge and the Strict Observance, the careers of Pasqually, Willermoz, Saint-Martin, and the Order's other principal figures, and its dissolution and legacy.
Sâr Phosphoros, Sovereign Grand Commander of the Christian Knights of Saint-Martin, brings this translation to English readers with an introduction addressing the work's terminology, its occasional shortcomings, and its enduring authority, along with translator's notes clarifying the many technical and doctrinal terms particular to Pasqually's system.
