With this security, and the additional one of having previously canvassed individually such of the Directors as it was thought could attend, and being certain of the votes of all the other Bailies, these gentlemen called a meeting at four days warning, to clear their characters. With exception, Sir, to such of the country Directors as they themselves wrote or spoke to, it is possible that most of the others never saw the advertisement until the meeting was over, and the characters cleared. Whether any little stain would have been left by the circumstance which is blazoned on the face of the proceedings, of a Director having offered, on fair time being given for the meeting, not only to support the charges ' of InvernessicuSy but to bring forward other facts which have had, and must continue to have, the greatest influence on the prosperity of the Academy, I leave it to the public to judge. On the most ordinary occasions, and at the quarterly meetings, although the intention is only to remind, (the specific day of meeting being previously known to every pirector, as fixed throughout the year) thfe advertisement on two preceding Fridays is thought necessary, yet on the present occasion, when the season of the year made at least double length of notice necessary, and although (with the exception to those specially let into the secret) not a soul ever heard of the intention before, fonr days warning is considered sufficient.
