Oakleigh is a novel written by Ellen Douglas Deland and published in 1895. It is a story set in a small town in New England during the late 19th century. The main character of the novel is a young woman named Ruth Lennox, who comes to Oakleigh as a governess for a wealthy family. Ruth is a strong-willed and independent woman who is determined to make a life for herself in the new town.As she settles into her new role, Ruth becomes involved in the lives of the people around her. She befriends a young girl named Alice, who is the daughter of the family she works for. She also becomes acquainted with a group of young men who are trying to start a literary magazine in the town.As the story unfolds, Ruth finds herself drawn to one of the young men, a writer named Hugh. However, their relationship is complicated by the fact that Hugh is engaged to another woman. Ruth must navigate her feelings for Hugh while also dealing with the challenges of her job and the expectations of society.Oakleigh is a novel that explores themes of love, friendship, and the struggle for independence in a time when women had limited opportunities. It is a beautifully written story that captures the spirit of a bygone era and the struggles of those who lived in it.This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
