Sex, Drugs, Rock-n-Roll . . . and Jesus? Nucking Futs is an autobiographical novel about a rock-n-roll group that doesn't make it. It begins on their very first and formative day, wonders in their creation of original and precocious music, deals with their rampant substance abuse, continues through their sexual proclivities, and ends when Jesus Christ comes and breaks up the band. In the late '70s, in our middle of nowhere town, some friends decided to become Rock Stars. I was there to help them. They needed help, too, big time. We had almost no idea of what we were doing, until we found a lead singer. He was a raving lunatic that everyone called Queenie. He seemed to know exactly what the hell he was doing. The first problem was that he really couldn't sing very well. There would be others. But he was a force to be reckoned with, I can promise you that! We just knew he was bound for fame and fortune. He was gonna take us all with him, too. Me, Lips, Booby, and Richie (and a few other long lost losers). What was holding us back was that we were all just seriously fucked up. We were confused all of the time, some of us were criminals, we were all hopelessly naïve, most of us couldn't keep our pants on, and we were forever getting wasted. Of course we had conflicts - with each other, our peers, the law, and society itself - but there was also ineffable joy. There were dreams to be doomed, and dreams that were realized. There were bonds of brotherhood seemingly forged for life, but those bonds wound up being ripped apart. There were more than enough bad songs written, but those led to enough good ones to make it all worthwhile. And then Jesus showed up and broke up the band. And that resulted in Queenie's horrible death. I think that Jesus killed him, too.
