John è nato nel 1928 nel New Jersey, USA, da genitori di origini umbre. Il padre, emigrato in Pennsylvania nel 1913, aveva ottenuto la cittadinanza americana nel 1918, dopo essersi arruolato nell'esercito americano. Tornò in Italia nel 1921 per sposarsi e ripartire per gli States nel 1922, raggiunto poi dalla moglie. Nel 1932 gli effetti della crisi di Wall Street consigliarono alla famiglia Ribeca di tornare in Italia. Il giovane John studierà nelle scuole del Regno e, subito dopo la guerra, a Terni, si diplomerà Perito Tecnico Metallurgico.
Nel 1949, la crisi postbellica spinge John a cercare, anche lui, fortuna negli States: in quattordici anni di lavoro in terra americana svilupperà una grande esperienza soprattutto in materia di impieghi di acciaio inox. John ritorna in Italia per la prima volta solo per sposarsi con Norma, giovane diplomata Ragioniera, con la quale si era promesso prima di partire. Nel 1963, con due figli nati negli USA, John e Norma torneranno definitivamente in Italia: fino al 1988 John svolgerà l'incarico di dirigente del Servizio Controllo Qualità della TERNINOSS di Terni, joint venture Soc TERNI/US STEEL.
