Maura Bolyn lost her husband and came to New York for a few weeks to stay with her sister Leeann, her husband Kristopher, and their three children, Kade, Ashlyn, and Brielle. Although it had been three years since losing her husband, Maura still had difficulty adjusting to her new life. A few months after losing her husband, the newspaper she worked for most of her adult life closed its operation.
Her family worried about her sinking deeper into depression. Her sister Leeann insisted that she leave everything that reminded her of her loss and comes to New York. Maura resisted initially but finally took her sister's advice and found herself in a different world.
On her previous visit, they were in a small apartment in Manhattan. The travel choices were taxi, the subway, uber, or.... walking. The subway was the first and most memorable of Maura's introduction to life in New York City, during her first visit with Leeann and Kris when they moved to New York from Indiana.
This was such a drastic change from the Midwest, where the sisters grew up. A car was a must-have for those living in the country and the small towns scattered throughout the countryside. Going to the grocery, church, school, work, and visiting family... depended on private transportation. Public transportation was available in larger cities but not in smaller communities.
When she came for this visit, the family had moved across the Hudson to a small community in New Jersey. This place was much more familiar to Maura. There were tree-lined streets with small mom-and-pop stores in the downtown square. The contrast to the lively big-city's towering skyscrapers near this small-town setting was amazing. Some people would view this as a little bit of both worlds.
But... the new world of the Big City was soon to change this country girl's life forever. New friends, a new job, a new love interest and new adventures are waiting just around the corner.
