Jeremy Montgomery is born into a talented Birmingham family, but just a few see him as a formative psychopath. At nineteen he takes to righting the wrongs of society, by murder. His first victim is a narcissistic body-builder, but then he becomes more ambitious; a bikers' gang responsible for the road-rage murder of the wife and daughter of Superintendent James Fox of the Birmingham Police.Following that tragedy Fox leaves Birmingham to take up the leadership of the Special Operations Division in Manchester where readers are introduced to the heroine, DS Janet Connor and her corrupt counterfoil, DS Sean Davies. The story bifurcates to follow the activities of within the 'Special Operations Division' of Manchester and that of Montgomery, with the strands converging in the final chapters. Montgomery hacks into police computers to follow any investigation against him, but unaware of the net closing around him, he oversteps, undertaking the multiple murder of human traffickers in central Manchester. With the help of a junior officer, DS Connor discovers a lead to his whereabouts. In the subsequent raid Montgomery takes Fox and Connor hostage in an armoured-car, allowing him to escape, first to Sheffield, then across the Channel. Their survival of that ordeal triggers declarations beyond professional boundaries and both Fox and Connor find the love and companionship that has been missing from their lives for so long.
