There is a voice narrating inside your head right now. It describes what you are doing as you do it. It tells you what kind of person you are, what each small decision says about you, which story makes sense to tell about who you are. It has been speaking in your own voice for as long as you can remember, so you assume you are the one producing it.
You are not.
That is the crime this book investigates.
The Neuronal Conspiracy begins at the exact moment you open it. The first five paragraphs of the prologue - in italics, unlabelled - are the Narrator doing in real time what it has been doing since you were born: building you an identity, giving you edges, loading you with meaning. The Bodyless Detective interrupts the process in the act. And from that moment on, you cannot unsee it.
What follows is twenty-one chapters organised as a criminal case file: interrogations of the suspects, witness testimonies, laboratory evidence, and cracks in the disguise through which something older and quieter briefly shows through.
The suspects have names. The Narrator - that left-hemisphere interpreter who never says I don't know and fabricates explanations as fluently as it breathes. The Mirror, which on the day you learned to recognise yourself in it taught you to confuse yourself with an image. Memory, which does not archive but rewrites, and swears every copy is the original. The Director, who arrives late to its own decisions and claims authorship of what was already in motion. Intention, which the brain scanner can read ten seconds before you feel it.
The witnesses are harder to interrogate, because what they saw has no precise words. There are those who lost a layer of the disguise without asking - through injury or illness - and described what remains when the sense of being someone switches off: not darkness, but something older and quieter than darkness. There are veteran meditators who have spent years training to lower the Narrator's volume and have begun to distinguish between the commentator and the game. There are psychedelic researchers who know what the scanner shows when the default mode network goes silent and the brain becomes less certain of who it is. And there is the hardware store worker - with no spiritual or philosophical framework whatsoever - who one Tuesday morning, while sweeping, experienced something that had no name in his vocabulary and that he nonetheless recognised as the most real thing he had ever felt.
The third part of the book does what neuroscience has spent decades attempting: describe the complete mechanism. The brain is not a passive receiver of the world but a prediction machine that generates models and updates them when they are wrong. The self is one of those models: the most central, the most costly to update, the one the system defends with an intensity proportional to what feels at stake. It is not a lie. It is an extraordinarily useful tool that made the mistake of impersonating whatever is using it.
The fourth part is not an instruction manual. It is a map of what changes once the trick has been seen up close: how one responds to the world without a rigid self to defend, what responsibility means without metaphysics, what dense water and the silence of a float tank can teach that thought alone cannot, why Parfit felt free when he proved that personal identity matters less than we believe.
The verdict is simple: no one is in charge. The crime was committed by the process, not by a criminal. And the victim - who has spent a lifetime reading the file of its own disappearance without recognising itself in the portrait - can, at any moment between the first page and the last, look into the correct mirror.
