An unscheduled stopover and a series of misadventures after an alcohol-fuelled night cause Myles Becker to become stranded in the Philippines, where he becomes entangled in a deadly feud and a perilous romance. He is recruited to manage Kathmandu, a troubled nightclub in the province of Barrio Del Mar, which is vying for the patronage of GIs at a US military installation during the 1980s Marcos era. Becker's life becomes intertwined with Leah, one of three Filipina sisters who have abandoned their destitute circumstances for the lure of Barrio Del Mar, a town that accurately captures the zeitgeist of a period when eccentric and sometimes ruthless expatriate bar owners held a troubled accord with the US base and the local constabulary. Becker earns the ire of violent nightclub owner Clayton McCoy when Kathmandu begins to rival McCoy's nightclub. Becker exacerbates the situation when he lures Leah away from McCoy, who vehemently sets out to reclaim her, which impels the rival nightclubs to erupt into a deadly feud that unsettles the delicate balance of the town.
