Fyodor Dostoevsky's Notes from Underground is a foundational existential novella. It follows an unnamed, bitter former civil servant known as the Underground Man. Retreated into isolation, he unleashes a raw, contradictory confession that attacks rationalism and explores free will, spite, and the alienating complexities of human nature. The narrator's over-analytical mind paralyzes him, isolating him from the very society he claims to despise. Dostoevsky uses the Underground Man to push back against the popular 19th-century belief that humans will always act in their own best, rational self-interest. Notes from Underground is widely considered the first existentialist novel, it explores what it means to be an individual in an indifferent world.
