Jesus Christ is the Prince of Peace. He gives His people peace. Yet He also declared, I have not come to bring peace, but a sword.
How can both be true?
And why, in one of Scripture's greatest declarations of the believer's security, does Paul write, For your sake we are being killed all the day long?
How can both be true?
And why, in one of Scripture's greatest declarations of the believer's security, does Paul write, For your sake we are being killed all the day long?
These are words Christians can be tempted to soften. But Scripture does not ask us to soften them. It asks us to understand them.
This book examines what happens when faithfulness to Christ brings not tranquility but conflict, suffering, rejection, and even division within one's own family. Beginning with Christ's startling declarations in Matthew 10 and Luke 12, it explores the difference between the peace Christ gives and the peace the world expects.
From Psalm 44 and Romans 8 to Joseph and his brothers, Jacob and Esau, David and Absalom, and ultimately the crucifixion of Christ, Scripture reveals a profound truth: human suffering and even sinful human opposition never place the believer outside the sovereign providence of God.
How can God ordain what comes to pass without becoming the author of sin? How can human beings remain genuinely responsible while God's sovereign purpose remains absolute? And how should Christians understand painful conflict when it enters their own homes and relationships?
The answers lead finally back to Christ.
The Christian is not promised an undisturbed life. He is promised something infinitely greater: the peace of Christ, the presence of Christ, the sovereign care of God, and a love from which nothing in all creation can separate him.
The sword is real. The division is real. The suffering is real.
But none of them has the final word.
Christ does.
