This new history of North Carolina during the American Revolution (and the years just before and after) traces a hard-fought transition from British colony to American state, 1763-1789. It explains how North Carolina, in cooperation with 12 other colonies, came to declare its independence from Great Britain and fought a long war to secure that separation. In addition to describing the roles of the state's most prominent political leaders, it details some of the fiercest battles in the entire theater of armed conflict. It portrays the often-violent civil conflict between North Carolinians who wanted independence (Patriots) and those who wanted to remain loyal to Britain (Loyalists).
The volume includes stories of the home front and of all North Carolinians--men, women, whites, Blacks, and Native Americans--whose lives were impacted by the war. It also details the processes by which North Carolina created its own Constitution and government, expanded its western boundary, and helped form a new nation under the United States Constitution.
