Description of: No Boarding Passes for Flies. By Jenny Guest Sophie is a very precocious two-year-old who relishes being her father's confidante. Her parents' relationship is not what one would call a loving one, in fact she spends the first few years of her life in a very dysfunctional family. When her little sister is born she takes up the role of a mother instead of that of an elder sister. At the age of seven she discovers that she has an amazing gift which will not only take her to stardom but also comfort her through the many ups and downs of her young life. Two rather distressing experiences and the sudden death of her mother unsettle her pragmatic personality. But nothing will deter her from becoming a famous pianist. But this book is not only about Sophie; it recounts the life of her wider family and the very distinctive characters in it. Her grandparents, in particular, play a very important role in her upbringing, as does her nanny who takes her mother's place at every decisive moment. The reader discovers the reason for this unusual book title of No boarding passes for flies in the last chapter.
