One word can be an insult.
The same word can be a greeting.
It can express friendship, solidarity, familiarity, or belonging.
And coming from the wrong person, it can provoke anger, offense, or confrontation.

Why?

For many people outside African American culture, this is one of the most difficult linguistic boundaries in America to understand. How can Black Americans use a word among themselves that can become deeply offensive when spoken by someone who is not Black? Why can a close Black friend sometimes use it toward a white friend? Why has Eminem been accepted within a predominantly Black hip-hop culture despite being white? And who, exactly, gets to decide where the boundary lies?
