Ayrshire Central Hospital in Irvine, the eldest of two
daughters to Joan Kerr Sturgeon (née Ferguson) and
Robin Sturgeon. Her parents represented the solid

Joan worked as a dental nurse, while her father Robin was
an electrician. The family's roots extended beyond
Scotland's borders, with her paternal grandmother
Margaret Sturgeon (née Mill) hailing from Ryhope in what
