Rabbits are the third most popular pet and the one people are given the least real information about. The hutch you were sold is probably too small. The muesli mix in the bag is a dental problem waiting to happen. And the single most useful thing you can do for your rabbit - weigh it once a week and write the number down - is not printed on any care sheet in the store.

- Hay first, then everything else - a rabbit should eat its own body size in hay every day. If that pile is not disappearing, something is wrong. Pellets, greens, treats and the muesli trap, in measured amounts.
- What the litter box is telling you - droppings are the cheapest diagnostic instrument you will ever own. Size, number, cecotropes, and what a change in any of them means.
- GI stasis and the twelve-hour clock - the chapter to read tonight, while nothing is wrong. What to do at four hours, at twelve, at twenty-four, what to do while you wait for the appointment, and why you cannot sort this out at home.
- Teeth: the disease you cannot see - overgrown molars affect roughly twice as many rabbits as overgrown front teeth. The teeth you can look at are not the ones most likely to be wrong.
- Handling and the prey-animal brain - being lifted is, to a rabbit, being caught. Start from there and everything else follows.
- Spay, neuter and bonding - the single most effective preventive intervention available, and the reason a bonded pair works better than a rabbit alone.

Rabbit husbandry contains real arguments between credible authorities. Minimum enclosure sizes differ by a factor of eight. UK and US vaccination advice are not the same advice and not for the reasons most people assume. Neutering age, water bowls versus bottles, whether to give simethicone at home - all genuinely contested. Most guides pick one answer and assert it. Why the weight log is the most important page in the bookRabbits conceal illness by design; a prey animal that shows weakness gets eaten.
