New Elements of Conic Sections: Together with a Method for their Description on a Plane is a book written by Philippe De La Hire and first published in 1729. The book provides a comprehensive introduction to the study of conic sections, which are the curves formed by the intersection of a plane and a cone. De La Hire's approach to the subject is both theoretical and practical, as he explains the mathematical principles behind conic sections while also providing clear and concise instructions for how to draw them on a plane. He also includes numerous diagrams and illustrations to aid in understanding the concepts he presents. The book is divided into several sections, each of which focuses on a different aspect of conic sections. De La Hire begins by introducing the basic properties of conic sections, including their equations and geometric properties. He then goes on to discuss the different types of conic sections, including ellipses, parabolas, and hyperbolas, and provides detailed instructions for how to draw each type.In addition to his discussion of conic sections, De La Hire also includes a chapter on the use of conic sections in optics, which was a popular application of the subject at the time. He explains how lenses and mirrors can be shaped to create different types of conic sections, and how these shapes can be used to control the path of light.Overall, New Elements of Conic Sections is a valuable resource for anyone interested in the study of geometry, mathematics, or optics. De La Hire's clear and concise explanations, combined with his practical approach to the subject, make this book an excellent introduction to the study of conic sections. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
