In August 1967, Navy Petty Officer Calvin Reese arrives at a forward operating base on the Mekong Delta with a corrected chart, a prayer card from his mother, and twelve months ahead of him on one of the most dangerous waterways of the Vietnam War.
His job is to navigate PBR-112 through the Nine Dragons - the braided southern channels of the Mekong where the official maps are already wrong, the channels shift with the seasons, and the difference between a survivable draft and a grounded boat in the kill zone is measured in inches. Calvin has been learning to read water since his mother took him into the Georgia tidal marshes at the age of eight. On the Mekong, that education becomes the thing that keeps his crew alive.
But the river is telling him something the briefings are not. More barge traffic. Different sampan patterns. Supplies moving at night. The margin log Calvin keeps alongside the official record - the knowledge that doesn't fit any form the Navy provides - is building toward a picture that the intelligence reports are missing. The question is whether anyone will read it before January 31, 1968.
