When it comes to hiking with our dogs, the word national carries a special magic. It speaks of belonging, of shared inheritance - of the open spaces that define who we are as a people. In America's National Parks dogs are usually limited to paved areas, overlooks, and campgrounds, barred from most trails to protect fragile ecosystems and wary wildlife. For a hiker traveling with a canine companion, that can mean peering longingly down paths that say no dogs allowed. In contrast, the 154 National Forests and 20 National Grasslands - a staggering 193 million acres of public land - were founded under a different ideal: multiple use. Here, dogs aren't bystanders - they're participants. It's a kind of freedom that honors the spirit of the wild - and the spirit of the dog.
In National Forests you'll find 9,000 miles of scenic byways, 150,000 miles of trails, and 4,400 miles of wild and scenic rivers. Many of these trails see a fraction of the traffic of nearby parks. That solitude means fewer crowds, fewer cars, and more moments of pure connection - the kind where your dog pauses to look back, ears pricked, as if to ask, Isn't this ours?
There's also a sense of history in these forests - the touch of the Civilian Conservation Corps, the legacy of early foresters like Gifford Pinchot who envisioned a democratic wilderness open to all. It's not manicured beauty behind a fence; it's raw, breathing nature.
For dog owners, variety is everything. The National Forests deliver it in abundance: shaded streamside walks for older dogs, high-elevation scrambles for the energetic, snowshoe routes for winter wanderers. They also offer access to wilderness areas, historic sites, and natural wonders - all with an understanding that dogs are part of the family, not an inconvenience.
A hike with a dog is unlike any other journey. Dogs live entirely in the moment - they do not hike to summit, to record, to compare. They hike to be. In the National Forests, we are invited to do the same.
When a lab splashes through a clear mountain stream, or a shepherd stands at attention on a windblown ridge, they remind us that the call of the wild isn't something we visit - it's something we share.
