What is the truth about Confederate General Nathan Bedford Forrest and the original 19th-Century Ku Klux Klan? In Nathan Bedford Forrest and the Ku Klux Klan: Yankee Myth, Confederate Fact, award-winning historian and Forrest scholar Lochlainn Seabrook challenges conventional accounts of Forrest's involvement with the Reconstruction-era organization and examines a controversial chapter of American history through period documents, official reports, rare photographs, illustrations, and eyewitness testimony.
One of thirteen books on General Forrest by Seabrook, this extensively researched study distinguishes the original Reconstruction-era Klan, which emerged after the American Civil War, from the later organization founded in 1915. The author investigates why the first Klan arose, the political and social conditions of Reconstruction, Forrest's alleged leadership role, the organization's stated purposes, and its relationship with both white and black Southerners. Seabrook also examines reports of black supporters, assistants, and members, including accounts concerning an all-black chapter in Nashville, Tennessee.
Placing the organization within the turbulent aftermath of the War Between the States, Seabrook presents evidence that he believes has frequently been ignored, misrepresented, or omitted from mainstream historical narratives. He explores the actions of Radical Republican politicians, the Freedmen's Bureau, Union Leagues, carpetbaggers, and Reconstruction governments while considering how political propaganda helped shape later perceptions of Forrest and the South. His conclusions dispute many familiar claims and invite readers to examine the surviving historical record for themselves.
The book contains more than 100 pages of material not found in Seabrook's larger biography, A Rebel Born: A Defense of Nathan Bedford Forrest. It also includes an index, bibliography, extensive reference notes, and a comprehensive section of appendices featuring the complete texts of the two Freedmen's Bureau Acts and the four Reconstruction Acts, together with period speeches, stories, prayers, and other relevant documents.
