A petition is more than an application.
The name written upon it belongs to a man with a family, responsibilities, questions, expectations, and a life already in progress. When he asks to become a Mason, he places more than his signature before the Lodge. He places a measure of trust into its hands.
What does the Lodge owe him in return?
The Name on the Petition: What We Owe a Candidate Before and After His Degrees examines the complete candidate experience, beginning with the first inquiry and continuing through petitioning, investigation, election, preparation, initiation, mentoring, belonging, and possible disengagement.
This is not simply a book about recruiting new members or increasing retention. It is a practical examination of how Lodges can receive men honestly, investigate them fairly, prepare them carefully, and remain beside them long enough for membership to become genuine Brotherhood.
F Brad Fowler invites Lodges to consider important questions:
Are we explaining Masonry honestly before a man petitions?
Does he understand the time, financial, family, and learning commitments?
Are investigating committees prepared to separate facts from rumors and personal preferences?
Do we respect the family behind the candidate?
Are we preparing only the degree, or are we also preparing the man?
Does the candidate remain at the center of his own initiation?
What does he experience before and after the formal ritual?
Does mentoring continue after proficiency has been completed?
When a newly raised Mason begins to disappear, does anyone know him well enough to ask why?
The book follows the candidate through four stages.
Before the Petition examines the man's first questions, his reasons for seeking membership, the early conversations that shape his expectations, and what the Lodge should explain before he signs.
The Name on the Petition explores the responsibility created when the Lodge formally receives his request. It addresses recommending Brothers, personal information, fair investigation, family circumstances, and the sacred trust carried by the investigating committee.
Preparing the Candidate considers the period between election and initiation, including communication, degree preparation, health and accessibility concerns, candidate dignity, meals, waiting, harmful teasing, and the many ordinary moments surrounding the ritual.
After the Degrees examines the difference between being raised and becoming rooted. It addresses continuing mentorship, education, meaningful work, Lodge culture, overcommitment, additional Masonic bodies, declining attendance, disappointment, conflict, and the empty chair left when a new Mason quietly withdraws.
