Rose was a strong woman who stuck and stayed in her marriage, not being able to leave Paul because of lack of education and work history as well as divorce being against society's norms not forgetting her unconditional love for him. So she lived with the hope of him changing and becoming a good husband and father. Sally, the mistress, cared for nothing and no-one except making sure she got what she wanted. She would do anything and everything just to get Paul all for herself only. The novel reiterates anger, disappointment, disillusionment, betrayal, happiness, and hope.
