My Friend the Muscovy is an educational book for young readers that introduces the unique world of Muscovies through Ferdinand and Fern, two birds who live at Our Happy Acres.
Ferdinand is a large, solid-white male Muscovy with bright red caruncles, while Fern is a smaller black-and-white female. Together, they help readers discover what makes Muscovies different from many other members of the duck family.
Written for readers in approximately grades 3-5, the book uses simple sentences, short paragraphs, and realistic illustrations to explain important facts in an easy-to-understand way. Young readers learn where Muscovies originally came from, how they communicate, how they forage for food, and why their strong feet and claws allow them to perch and roost. The book also introduces flight feathers, preening, webbed feet, nesting, eggs, brooding, incubation, and the development of young Muscovies.
Readers also learn the difference between a male Muscovy, called a drake, and a female, called a hen. Detailed illustrations help make these lessons clear by showing Ferdinand and Fern behaving naturally around the woodland, pond, and grassy areas of their homestead.
More than a story about two birds, My Friend the Muscovy encourages children to slow down, observe animals carefully, and appreciate the special traits and behaviors that make each species unique.
A glossary at the back of the book defines important words such as caruncle, forage, incubation, preen, roost, webbing, and other terms introduced throughout the book, giving young readers an easy reference as they learn.
Part of the Our Happy Acres Young Readers Series, My Friend the Muscovy combines animal husbandry, nature education, and life on the homestead in a warm and approachable way for curious young readers.
