Glass must cool slowly to be stable. When molten glass cools too quickly, the outer surface hardens before the inner layers have settled. This traps internal stress throughout the piece, stress that cannot be seen but can cause sudden, spontaneous breakage.
Glassmakers call this inafferrabile tension un-annealed.
The process that prevents this is called annealing: holding the glass at a controlled temperature, then letting it cool gradually so internal tensions can release.
To protect their creations, artisans place the glass into a long, warm chamber where the heat slowly, evenly, gently relaxes those inner stresses. This process is where glass learns to hold itself together.
Onyx was never annealed.
This makes her fragile.
But it also makes her urgent.
And so she begins her journey not as a perfect creation, but as a fragile one.
Everything Onyx seeks, meaning, purpose, acceptance, fearlessness is the emotional version of the annealing she was denied.
Through philosophy.
Through kindness.
Through seeing the world.
Through finding the window and the sunset.
Onyx's quest is to attempt to finish the annealing process on her own and become a being in equilibrium.
