Mother is a novel written by the Russian author Maxim Gorky, first published in 1906. The story is set in late 19th century Russia and follows the life of a working-class woman named Pelageya Nilovna, or simply Mother. The novel portrays the struggles of the Russian working class, their poverty, and their revolutionary spirit.The book begins with the death of Pelageya's husband, leaving her to raise their son Pavel alone. Pavel becomes involved in revolutionary activities and is eventually arrested and sent to Siberia. This prompts Pelageya to become more politically aware and active in the revolutionary movement herself.As the story progresses, Mother becomes a leader in the local revolutionary group and organizes a strike against the factory where she works.
