These stories are absolutely gorgeous. Von Ward's writing is lyrical and graceful, finely wrought. This book is absolutely deserving of a wide audience.
We greet each reappearance of a character as we would an old friend, and while the customs and traditions detailed are new to anyone outside the Mormon faith, we are swept up in them as if we've practiced all our lives. When we depart these characters' world, what remains with us is not their cultural oddities, but their aching humanity.
I was captivated... the author and I are fellow travelers, having both spent more time than we could afford living in Mormonland.
Von Ward's stories move interestingly through time, and manage to take in something of an epic sweep. The scenes are compelling and surprising.
About the Author
Jeff Von Ward is the author of Mormonia: Stories, managing editor of Samizdat Literary Journal, and co-creator of the Writing without Walls reading series. He also edits the popular City Lights podcast series, Live! From City Lights. He is a recent graduate of the M.F.A. in Writing program at California College of the Arts. He is currently hard at work finishing his first novel.
