A WORLD WITHOUT BIRDS
Bag of bones is the pastor's daughter in a small community on the shores of a northern lake. This sensitive romantic girl sees something of herself in Jo, one of the four daughters of Dr March.
Her father tends to be philosophical and pragmatic while her mother has her head in the clouds and is quite capable of forgetting her daughter in her pram or bathing in the freezing lake by the light of a full moon. Her gloomy, violent brother is happiest living with his dogs, reduced to an animal state.

But Bag of bones is radiant, consumed with love for old Joseph, who has returned to the region after the flood, shrouded in unsettling rumours that claim he is a cannibal... it is with Joseph that she learns about life: making fire, cultivating her garden, diving into the lake without waking the dead...This is one of the most wonderful novelties in this disturbing and bewitching magical tale: the bottom of the lake is the last resting place of the community's people, it is strewn with coffins, each one made with holes in the wood so the bodies can return the waters of the lake, can be eaten by the fish before they in turn are eaten by people...
