Missy's mother is owned by, and cooks for, the Mathews family. Her father furnishes supplies to the Matthews' kitchen. Born into slavery, Missy is half black and half Choctaw Indian.
She grows up with Caleb Matthews, her owner's son. Caleb's attraction to Missy grows as they get older, and hers for him does the same. In their teenage years, the relationship leads to them having two children. However, to save the Matthews family any embarrassment, Missy is left heartbroken when her children are taken away and Caleb is sent off to college. She has no choice but to stay and cook for the family and vows to make the best of it.
Missy's Life as a Slave follows the disappointments and growth of the relationships of the characters. Missy's honesty, devotion to the family and her dedication to her duties as a slave, wins the hearts of the Matthews'. Many lives are changed by the young woman.
The end of slavery after the Civil War was the start of a new day, which depicts the journey to freedom.
