This book offers a compelling exploration of the bolt-action rifles that shaped Mexico's military landscape from the late nineteenth to the mid-twentieth century. At its core is a detailed study of the Mauser system, with particular emphasis on its adoption and service life in Mexico. Under the administration of Porfirio DÃaz, the 7 mm Mauser was formally approved in the mid-1890s and quickly earned the confidence of the armed forces, becoming the standard service rifle of the Porfirian army.
Amid the upheavals of revolution and shifting international alliances, Mexico faced chronic shortages of arms and the constraints of U.S. embargoes. In response, the government turned to alternative sources, incorporating Japanese Arisaka rifles, American Enfield M1917 rifles, and Russian Mosin-Nagant rifles. Surplus American arms were also acquired as political circumstances evolved, reflecting the complex and often pragmatic nature of military procurement during this turbulent period.
Beyond the battlefield, this volume uncovers the origins of Mexico's military-industrial ambition. It brings to light the little-known Gasca mission to Europe, a pivotal effort that laid the groundwork for a domestic arms and ammunition industry. Through meticulous research and rich historical context, this book presents not only the evolution of military firearms, but also the broader story of a nation striving for self-reliance in an era of conflict and transformation.
