Meeting Yu is more than a memoir of work, migration, family and self-discovery. It is the story of a woman who repeatedly chose to begin again.
Born in rural China and coming of age during decades of extraordinary social and economic change, Vicky Yu moved through multiple industries, cities, relationships, and identities. From factory offices and foreign trade companies to insurance, education, and life in New York City, she witnessed firsthand how rapidly changing societies reshape individual lives.
Along the way were successes and disappointments, friendships and love stories, difficult departures and unexpected new beginnings. Each turning point required courage: the courage to leave, to learn, to adapt, and sometimes to start over completely.
Meeting Yu carries a double meaning. Yu is the author's family name, while Meeting echoes its pronunciation. The title reflects a lifetime of encounters-with people, places, opportunities, challenges, and ultimately with oneself.
