Mary Moody Emerson by George Tolman is a biography of Mary Moody Emerson, the aunt of renowned American essayist and poet Ralph Waldo Emerson. The book traces her life from her birth in 1774 to her death in 1863, and explores her role as a pioneering intellectual and feminist in early 19th century America. Tolman draws on a range of primary sources, including Mary's own journals and letters, to paint a vivid portrait of a woman who defied the conventions of her time and pursued a life of independent thought and action. The book covers Mary's early years in Massachusetts, her travels to Europe and her relationships with prominent figures such as Samuel Taylor Coleridge and William Wordsworth. It also examines her influence on her nephew Ralph Waldo Emerson, who credited her with shaping his own intellectual and spiritual development. Overall, Mary Moody Emerson offers a fascinating insight into the life and legacy of a remarkable woman who helped to pave the way for future generations of female thinkers and writers. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
