In this comprehensive collection, you will discover:
- The haunting tale of Myandash, the revered reindeer deity of the Kola Sámi
- Gods and goddesses of the Forest Sámi.
- Sacred beings and mythical creatures from both western and eastern Sámi cultures
- Historical accounts from across Scandinavia that shaped Sámi identity
- Legendary stories of powerful shamans, including the renowned Akmeeli and Aikia Aikianpoika, whose spiritual practices bridged the mortal and divine realms
This book illuminates not just a single indigenous culture, but the beautiful diversity within it. Their myths speak of transformation, survival, and the sacred relationship between humans, animals, and the harsh yet magnificent Arctic landscape. Whether you're a student of comparative mythology, indigenous spirituality, or Nordic history, this volume offers invaluable insights into one of Europe's oldest living cultures and the spiritual wisdom that has sustained them through millennia. Beautifully illustrated by the author.
Through stories, symbols, and spiritual concepts, it examines the powerful role of animals in Sámi mythology. Reindeer, bears, birds, wolves, and other beings are not merely creatures of the natural world, but spiritual relatives, guides, and messengers. Each animal carries symbolic meaning tied to survival, balance, and the unseen forces that connect all living things. The book also delves into Sámi animism, a worldview in which nature is alive, conscious, and worthy of respect. Mountains, rivers, stones, and winds are understood as spiritual presences, and humans exist not above nature, but within it. This perspective offers a profound alternative to modern ideas of dominance over the natural world, emphasizing reciprocity, humility, and harmony. Combining mythology, cultural insight, and spiritual reflection, this work invites readers to reconnect with nature through an Indigenous lens. It is ideal for readers interested in Sámi culture, Indigenous spirituality, animal symbolism, shamanic traditions, folklore, and ecological wisdom.
Alongside its spiritual and mythological themes, this work confronts the painful historical realities faced by the Sámi people. It addresses the policies of Finnification and Norwegianization imposed by the church and crown (also practised in Sweden and Russia) beginning in the 17th century, which sought to suppress Sámi languages, religion, and cultural practices. Shaman drums were confiscated and destroyed, shamans were persecuted, and Indigenous knowledge systems were systematically erased or driven underground. This historical context is essential to understanding both the resilience of Sámi traditions and the cultural loss that continues to echo today. Written by folklorist Nina Mielipäivä.Preserve. Remember. Honor. The myths of the Sámi people await.
