Since time immemorial, the Iberian Peninsula has been a melting pot of peoples, cultures, and civilizations. However, throughout history, numerous myths and simplifications have circulated that distort our understanding of its past. One of the most persistent is the belief that Spain was always Islamic before the Christian Reconquista, when in reality its history is much richer and more complex.
This book aims to debunk that myth, to show with historical and documentary rigor that the Spain we know today is not exclusively Islamic in origin, but rather the result of the combination and coexistence of diverse cultures: Iberians, Celts, Romans, Visigoths, and many others that left their indelible mark on our territory.
From the pre-Roman era, through Romanization, Visigothic influence, the period of Al-Andalus and the gradual Reconquista, to the culmination of the Catholic Monarchs in 1492, a story unfolds that captures the true essence of our identity. An identity that was cemented in diversity, dialogue, and, ultimately, the consolidation of a modern state under Christianity, which opened Spain to an era of prosperity and global expansion.
I invite the reader to explore these pages with an open mind and a critical spirit, to discover not only the facts, but also the complex cultural interactions that forged our shared history. Because understanding our past is the key to valuing and defending our present and future.
