For countless generations, the ancient stone edifice known, locally, as 'The Lantern Tower' has stood upon the outskirts of Thorganby village, a half a dozen miles, or so, from the Yorkshire market town of Malton. Of those who simply come across it by chance, most assume it to be the remnants of an old windmill - although the villager's, themselves, hold to different theories. Some, it is said, believe it to have been a watchtower, built by the old smugglers - as well as being a place in which to conceal their booty. Others think it is some kind of fortification constructed during the English Civil War - when the armies of parliament opposed those loyal to the King. A few, however, will attest that it dates back to a much earlier period of our history, when much of Great Britain was ruled by Rome. Still, whatever varied or opposing theories the villagers may hold concerning the origins of the old building - upon one thing, at least, they are very much agreed. The Lantern Tower is not a place to be wandering around of an evening - particularly if you happen to be on your own. Indeed, to say that the building is haunted is, probably, an understatement of the truth - for the ghosts who walk there (if, indeed, there are such things) are not, simply, the sort who jump out and say 'Boo!' No, the fact of the matter is that the place has something infinitely more disturbing and dangerous about it than your typical haunted building. Mind you, just what that 'something' may, actually be, no-one seems to have the slightest clue. Well, no-one, that is, except for local plumber and business owner, Jack Edwards - whose own rather unsettling experience on the tower, as a child, has left him determined to uncover the truth. However, as Jack, himself, eventually comes to realize - and significantly to his cost - there are certain kinds of riddles which are better left unsolved.........
